Opioid Prescription in Dialysis Patients

SSS epidemiologist Chyng-Wen Fwu is among the authors of an article in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology that describes an analysis of the prescription of opioids and patient outcomes among maintenance dialysis patients using data from the U.S. Renal Data System for 2006–2010. Findings showed that opioid drug prescription is associated with increased risk of death and hospitalization for dialysis patients. The authors concluded that, while a causal relationship cannot be inferred, less toxic interventions to treat pain in these patients deserve consideration. The article was coauthored with researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, George Washington University, and a consultant pharmacist.
