Measuring Closeness to the Cancer Experience
SSS health researcher M. Elizabeth Hodgson was among the authors of the presentation Measuring the Degree of Closeness to the Cancer Experience: Revisiting the Connection to the Experience of Cancer Scale (CONNECS) at the Society of Behavioral Medicine 2018 Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions. The presentation described a study using Sister Study data to examine previous research that indicated that watching a family member live with, or die from, cancer can have a significant personal impact on beliefs about cancer. Using an updated scale to measure closeness to the cancer experience, the results of the new research were consistent with the original results, and the new items on the survey provided greater discrimination in closeness. Other authors of the presentation were researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
