In Vitro Analyses and Prioritization of Toxic Chemicals
SSS research scientists Matthew Bridge and Marjo Smith are among the authors of an article in Environmental Health Perspectives that describes an approach for toxicity testing of the large numbers of chemicals in commerce that lack toxicological assessment that moves away from animal studies toward less expensive and higher-throughput in vitro methods. The study’s tiered testing to identify and characterize mitochondrial toxicants may reduce animal use in toxicological testing. Other authors of the article include former SSS staff and researchers from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Food and Drug Administration, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, University of Louisville School of Medicine, and Environmental Protection Agency.
