Colorectal Cancer Screening in Dialysis Patients
SSS epidemiologist Chyng-Wen Fwu was the first author of an article in Clinical Kidney Journal that reported the results of a comparison of colorectal cancer screening practices in dialysis patients and in the general Medicare population. The authors found that colonoscopy in dialysis patients on the kidney transplant waiting list was similar to or higher than that in Medicare patients of the same age, while performance of colonoscopy in non-wait-listed patients was significantly lower than among general Medicare patients of the same age. Given improved survival among dialysis patients in the last decade, the authors recommended the utility of colorectal cancer screening be reassessed. The article was coauthored with researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
