James J. Lynch, Ph.D., is the president and CEO of Social & Scientific Systems. Initially, Dr. Lynch served as proposal manager, later as vice president for Business Development, and finally as executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) before being appointed president and COO in 2005. Most recently, Dr. Lynch was appointed chief executive officer (CEO), succeeding Mary Frances leMat, one of the company's founders, who retired in 2006. His other board and advisory committee affiliations include the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Technology Council of Maryland and the Professional Services Council. He also served on the Hearts & Homes for Youth Board of Directors and is a graduate of Leadership Washington's Class of 2004. Dr. Lynch received the Outstanding Service Award in 2003 from the Professional Service Council for exceptional leadership of the Council's Annual Conference Committee. Dr. Lynch holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas. He taught writing at the university level for 13 years and is the author of several publications.
Donna Bareis, Ph.D., is the chief operating officer. Before joining the company in April 2006, she was vice president and deputy operation manager of life sciences at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). Dr. Bareis was at SAIC for more than 20 years, starting as a staff scientist and moving through positions of increasing responsibility for projects, personnel, and organizations. As deputy operation manager, she handled technical, financial, personnel, and contract management for an organization of about 250 staff members. Dr. Bareis was a member of the Executive Science and Technology Committee and was designated as an SAIC Technical Fellow for exceptional scientific contributions. From 1996 to 2005, she served on the Board of Directors of the Technology Council of Maryland. Dr. Bareis earned her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at The Pennsylvania State University and her doctorate in pharmacology at Duke University, where she was a James B. Duke Fellow.
Bruce P. Beddow, J.D., has served as the chief financial officer for the company since 2003. Mr. Beddow also serves as one of the trustees of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Before joining Social & Scientific Systems in 1998, he worked as an attorney in private practice. Prior to becoming an attorney, he worked as a certified public accountant for Deloitte & Touche LLP in the firm's audit and Federal services practices. Mr. Beddow earned his undergraduate degree in general management from Purdue University and a doctorate in jurisprudence from the Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington. He is a member of the bars of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Kevin Beverly is the senior vice president for business development and corporate strategy. Before joining Social & Scientific Systems, he worked in various technical and policy organizations, including Abt Associates, Computer Sciences Corporation, BAE Systems, the World Health Organization, and the National Library of Medicine. His strength and experience in operations and sales and marketing has helped the company's recent growth. In addition to founding the Mildred Beverly Memorial Family Fund, which supports the education needs of underprivileged youth in Dorchester County, Maryland, Mr. Beverly serves on the boards of the Montgomery County Community Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of Montgomery County, the Career Transition Center, and the Friends of the Montgomery County Library. He serves as treasurer for Passion for Learning. Mr. Beverly holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in library science and information services, both from the University of Maryland.
June Melvin Mickens, J.D., is chief administrative officer (CAO) at Social & Scientific Systems. Prior to being appointed CAO, she served as the director of organizational communication. Before joining the company, Ms. Mickens was deputy director of the D.C. Office of the Attorney General's Child Support Services Division, policy specialist of its Family Services Division, and Abuse and Neglect Section chief. She was president of JMM Consulting, a human services and management consulting firm. She was on the staff of Tier Technologies, which included service at the Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement as FCR family violence coordinator. She also has served as deputy executive director of the National Association of Black Accountants, an American Bar Association Center on Children and the Law assistant staff director, and an adjunct professor at the Howard University School of Social Work. Currently, she is a member of the Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Women's Advisory Board of the Girl Scouts of the Nation's Capital. Ms. Mickens earned her undergraduate degree in English from Wellesley College and graduate degree in law from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the bars in the District of Columbia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
